Students from reindeer husbandry school in Kautokeino visit ICR office
Today International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry had a meeting with students from Sámi Upper Secondary and Reindeer Husbandry School in Kautokeino and their teachers – Karen Inga Kemi, Torbjørn Larsen and Samuel Gaup.
ICR director Anders Oskal gave a lecture about world reindeer herding, the work of ICR and Association of World Reindeer Herders, he also made presentations about different projects where ICR and WRH were involved.
ICR managers Elna Sara, Alena Gerasimova and Svetlana Avelova were also participating in the meeting. Alena and Sveta introduced Evenki reindeer herding of Southern Yakutia for students, and shared their experience of organising the Nosegcher/EALLU projects in Yakutia, for example – one of the seminars took place in Chersy at the Arctic college of the Peoples of the North – the only college in Yakutia which trains young reindeer herders.
Participants pointed out the importance of youth engagement in reindeer herding practicies and preservation of traditional knowledge for the sake of future reindeer husbandry.
