WRH Council President’s visit to Sapmi

Association of World Reindeer Herders and UiT rector Anne Husebekk in Tromso

Last week President of the Council of the Association of World Reindeer Herders (WRH), Sergey Khariuchi, had a visit to Sapmi. Sergey together with Nenets reindeer herder from Yamal and also WRH Board members, Mikhail Iar, participated in the Arctic Frontiers 2018 in Tromso, where they had meetings with the  Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Norway, Teimuraz Ramishvili, rector of the University of Tromso, Anne Husebekk, representatives of the Parmanent Participants to the Arctic Council and others, to discuss different issues such as cooperation between reindeer herders from different countries, providing education for nomadic indigenous students etc.. Together with the Chair of WRH Board, Mikhail Pogodaev, and WRH general secretary Anders Oskal, they visit traditional Sámi reindeer herding areas in Bardufoss and Kautokeino, where they also took time to meet reindeer herders and visit slaughtering facility Hjerttind owned and ran by sámi reindeer herders.

The delegation later visited International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry and Reindeer herding Sámi Upper Secondary and Reindeer Husbandry School in Kautokeino where they met students.
