National Center for Reindeer Herding Development opens in Salekhard

   On November 25 the National Center for Reindeer Herding Development (NCRHD) was open in the town of Salehard, Yamal, Russia. The opening was attended by reindeer herders from Yamal, Mongolia and Norway, representatives of the Association of World Reindeer Herders (WRH), International Center for Reindeer Husbandry (ICR), Center for the Arctic Development and Scientific Center for the Arctic Study.


   WRH Council president Sergey Kharyuchi and the head of NCRHD outlined the main areas of work of the Center, such as working with statistical data and analyzing information on the state of reindeer herding in the regions of Russia and abroad; distribution of information about reindeer herding; conducting research and scientific activities in the field of reindeer herding and traditional knowledge; work with young reindeer herders and young representatives of indigenous peoples of the North and the Arctic, etc.
WRH Chairman Mikhail Pogodaev congratulated everyone who was present at the opening of the Center, and also thanked Andrey Umnikov, director of the Center for the Arctic Development, and Anton Sinitsky, director of the Scientific Center for the Arctic Study, who also expressed their will to cooperate with NCRHD.

  Inger Anita Smuk, chair of the ICR Board, and Anders Oskal, ICR director, noted the importance of creating such centers for reindeer husbandry. There are other centers to be established in Mongolia and Scotland. Reindeer herder and WRH Board member from Mongolia Batulga Solnoi has informed on the status of reindeer herding in his home country, saying that the creation of such a center in Mongolia is very important in view of the critical situation of reindeer herding and the loss of traditional knowledge.
Participants of the meeting plan to spend another couple of days in Salehard, during which they will also continue to discuss the direction and organization of the work of the National Center for Reindeer Herding Development
