The Congress of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and Far East of Russia Started in Saint-Petersburg

congress of indigenous peoples in saint-petersburgMay 27, the Congress Of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and Far East of Russian Federation started today at annual City Day celebration in Saint-Petersburg. The Association of World Reindeer Herders and International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry are represented in the Congress by the Chair of the Board Mikhail Pogodaev, scientific adviser Anna Degteva, events coordinator Svetlana Avelova and project manager Alena Gerasimova. The Congress, which is going to last till May 29, and which is held at the Herzen Univeristy, has brought together representatives of the federal and regional authorities of the Russian Federation, representatives of the social and scientific organizations,   foreign and russian experts who study the questions of indigenous peoples of the North.

Within this Congress there will be held international scientific and practical  conference “The Reality of Ethnos” with the main theme “Education – Culture – Economy in the Sustainable Development of the Russian Federation”.

It is planned to have preliminarily sessions, round-table discussions, sessions’ meetings. The participants of the Congress will estimate the situation of indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia, and Far East of Russia; they will discuss issues and challenges of ethno-regional development, culture-educational and socio-economic context, the preservation of native languages and culture of indigenous small-numbered peoples; will point out the main perspectives for future work.
