December 5, 2018, the VIII International Forum “Arctic: Today and the Future” began its work in St. Petersburg. As the news on the Arctic: Today and the Future report, the plenary session of the Forum has been opened by the President of the Association of Polar Explorers, the Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for International Cooperation in the Arctic and Antarctic Artur Chilingarov.

“Ten years ago, in September 2008, the Basics of State Policy in the Arctic was approved in Russia – and this launched the contemporary history of the development of the polar region. What has been done is well known, but what is to be done is going to be discussed the next two days,” began Artur Chilingarov.

He noted that legislative issues come to the fore, and discussions should be active here. The Forum will also discuss issues of environmental safety, protection of the interests of the North, staff training, working with young people, preservation of cultural heritage, technology development and the digital economy, and international non-governmental cooperation.

“Saint Petersburg has always been the capital of the Arctic, and I am convinced that today in this city we will become participants of interesting discussions that will make it possible to work out and make informed decisions. I wish us fruitful work and useful meetings,”concluded Artur Chilingarov.
