World Reindeer Herders at the Arctic Council SDWG meeting in Rovaniemi

Arctic Council Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG) meeting took place in Rovaniemi, Finland, on 29-30 October 2018. Interesting discussions were held about progress updates from SDWG projects, which aim to foster sustainable development in the Arctic and address socio-economic challenges in the region.

About 87 participants took part in this meeting, including representatives of seven Observer states, nine other Observer organizations, three Working Groups (ACAP, CAFF, EPPR) and two invited experts (Arctic Economic Council, SITRA). 

“…we will honorably represent Arctic reindeer herding peoples, and of course we will make a worthy contribution to the work of the Arctic Council, and respectively to sustainability and development in the Arctic territory” – WRH president Sergey Khariuchi

Association of World Reindeer Herders (WRH) necessraly took part at this meeting, and also presented the outcomes of the Arctic Council EALLU project about indigenous youth, food knowledge and Artic change. WRH suggested that the project continue and already received some Arctic Council SDWG members supported to suggestion. As the WRH president Sergey Khariuchi said “…because there is still a lot of work to be done in this direction, in preservation of food culture of the indigenous peoples of the North. I must say, it will be of great practical importance for young people of indigenous communities who intend to do business. This is a great resource book that will have practical use”.
