Arctic Council SDWG EALLU Traditional Foods Book Launches Today

One of the main deliverables from the EALLU project is officially launched today at a side event to the Arctic Council Ministerial. The book is entitled “INDIGENOUS YOUTH, ARCTIC CHANGE & FOOD CULTURE. FOOD, KNOWLEDGE AND HOW WE HAVE THRIVED ON THE MARGINS”.

In terms of the breadth and scope, this is a unique publication that encompasses the traditional food culture of 14 different indigenous peoples through their own presentation of as many as 30 ‘recipes’. Contributions are drawn from Sámi, Nenets, Evenki, Chukchi, Even, Dukha, Inuit, Gwichin, Aleut, Koryak, Athabaskan and more. Many of the authors, in line with the project goals are drawn from indigenous youth. This is not a regular ‘cookbook’, as a quick glance at the menu illustrates:

EALLU Arctic Council Book Launch Countdown

Final preparations for the official launch of the SDWG Arctic Council EALLU project primary deliverable are underway in Fairbanks, Alaska. The ICR/WRH/EALLU team from Norway and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) are gathered in Fairbanks for the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting which takes place tomorrow May 10 -11th. The launch will take place at a side event to the Ministerial (see full programme here or below. The launch will feature reindeer meat tasting (2 Alaskan reindeer have been slaughtered for the event) with meat prepared by Sámi chef Nils Bendik Dunfjeld. EALLU Book Launch at Arctic Council Ministerial Event

The EALLU project primary delivery is a substantial ‘cookbook’ over over 160 pages of text and striking photography that gives a brand overview of 10 indigenous peoples food culture through the prism of specific dishes – some 30 recipes in all.

Traditional food and its preparation, conservation and consumption goes to  the very heart of indigenous peoples in the Arctic and their relationships with their community, land and animals. Many of the dishes are from reindeer and caribou, but there are other examples also of foods from marine mammals, plants on land and in sea and more. 

The book will be launched at an event being held during the Arctic Council Ministerial in Fairbanks Alaska. The launch will be followed by a panel discussion hosted by the UAF Reindeer Research Program, in partnership with the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry. Topics will revolve around food, knowledge, youth and how best to utilise food and traditional knowledge for community empowerment.

Perhaps best of all? Reindeer meat will be served!!

WRH and ICR attended SDWG and SAO meetings in Alaska

Events included a meeting of the Sustainable Development Working Group of the Arctic Council (SDWG) in Barrow, Arctic Science Summit Week, Arctic Observing Summit and Senior Arctic Officials meeting.

Herders in Alaska Turn to Crowdfunding to Build Mobile Slaughter House

Mobile Slaughter UnitThe Midnite Sun Reindeer Ranch in Nome, Alaska has taken the unusual step of turning  to crowdfunding to raise the estimated $200,000 needed to purchase 2 winter insulated mobile slaughtering unit, in order that they could slaughter and process reindeer meat year round and obtain a USDA licence which would give them the possibility to broaden the scope of their sales. Currently they are only permitted to slaughter on frozen ground and sell to other processors and local people.

According to an article on the KNOM Radio Mission (listen / read here on their site), there are no USDA approved reindeer meat processors in the region. The ranch is hopeful that there is a pent up demand for locally available, fresh, quality meat. You can read about the ranch and their crowdfunding campaign ‘Mobile Slaughter Unit & Process Unit’ here on Indiegogo (so far, they have raised $250..there is some way to go..).

ICR Director Oskal in Alaska for Arctic Energy Summit & Arctic Council SDWG

Arctic Energy Summit The Arctic Energy Summit gets underway today in Fairbanks, Alaska and the Director of the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry is one of the plenary speakers under the theme of ‘Understanding Commmunity Perspectives’. The Summit is a multi-disciplinary event expected to draw several hundred industry officials, scientists, academics, policy makers, energy professionals and community leaders together to collaborate and share leading approaches on Arctic energy issues – no doubt Shell’s recent bombshell announcement will be top of mind!

At the end of the week, Oskal will be attending the first Arctic Council SDWG meeting under the U.S. chairmanship which also takes place in Fairbanks. Oskal is travelling with Johan Mathis Turi, Secretary General of the Association of World Reindeer Herders and they will also be meeting with representatives of the Kawerak Reindeer Herders’ Association.

Life on different banks (Alaska and Chukotka)

At the conference “Days of Beringia” that was held the last time in 2013, the participants concerned the fact that today there is less connection between Chukotka and Alaska, contacts between related indigenous peoples of the two countries have weakened. It was stressed that even in the difficult 90’s connection were much closer, that cultural exchange was carried out regularly enough.  And one of the decisions of the conference was to have conferences through TV and radio service (since today there is no means for regular trips overseas).  It was scheduled to have twelve of suchlike conferences in 2014.
