I am a Young Reindeer Herder

The “Young Reindeer Herder” movement was initiated in 2015 in the Evenki village called Iengra, in Republic of Yakutia, Russia. The movement, which has an Evenki name – bi ilmakta ete’yechimni, encourages children to continue reindeer husbandry and also promotes delivering traditional knowledge from elders to youth.  One of the brightest achievements of the children’s movement is organizing  traditional children’s reindeer race, the number of participants of this competition is growing every year. The movement also attracts reindeer herding youth who study at the indigenous boarding school “Arctic” which is situated in Neryungri, Russia.

 22 – 23 of September the “Arctic” school has been celebrating the annual Bakaldin Festival (in Evenki language Bakaldin means meeting) and this year’s celebration was to honor reindeer.

Young herders met again at the Parliament of Sakha Republic

13095825_1310345465661282_8731540934478839728_nToday at the Parliament of Sakha Republic were held a press-conference with young reindeer herders – students of the UArctic EALAT Institute about their trip to Norway for 8j-100 education course on biodiversity and food culture traditional knowledge. Students just came back to their homelands, and they already were asked to have a press-conference with Yakutian mass-media. They shared their experience and still have a lot of impressions from the last two weeks in Norway.

Students from reindeer husbandry school in Kautokeino visit ICR office

young reindeer herdersToday International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry had a meeting with students from Sámi Upper Secondary and Reindeer Husbandry School in Kautokeino and their teachers – Karen Inga Kemi, Torbjørn Larsen and Samuel Gaup.

ICR director Anders Oskal gave a lecture about world reindeer herding, the work of ICR and Association of World Reindeer Herders, he also made presentations about different projects where ICR and WRH were involved.

Indigenous youth in Kamchatka (Russia) urged to work in reindeer husbandry

olenevody_kamchatkiAccording to local administration, young indigenous people in the North of Russia – Kamchatka, participated in a meeting devoted to occupational guidance. The meeting was conducted by Valentina Bronevich, vice-chairman of the Government of Kamchatka region. The main issue to discuss was to promote youth employment in reindeer husbandry of the region.

The meeting gathered around 30 participants, among them were residents from Khailino village, Apuka village, Ossora village and Srednie Pakhachi village. All the participants expressed their interest and concern about salary of reindeer herders, issues of education and employment into reindeer husbandry, and measures of state and local administration support for those who choose this profession for themselves.

Natalia Nitsenko, the head of Employment and Migration Policy Department of Kamchatskiy region, Vladimir Kleymenov, head of “PO Kamchatolenprom” enterprise, and representatives of regional ministries and departments of Kamchatskiy region were answering to the questions addressed by young people.
