Land Fragmentation and Indigenous Resilience: Challenges and Solutions for Implementing UNDRIP

Date: Tuesday, April 22, 2025
Time: 13:15 – 14:30 (GMT-5)
Venue: Conference Room 12.2, United Nations Headquarters, New York & Online

We are pleased to announce a side event at the 2025 United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), organized by the Reindeer Herding and Resilience Project at the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry (ICR) and the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH).

This multi-stakeholder event will explore the growing challenges of land fragmentation and encroachment on Indigenous territories, and how these affect the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

Presentations will feature Indigenous reindeer herding and pastoralist communities, including the Dukha and the Sámi, with a focus on:

  • Indigenous-led models for livelihood resilience and adaptation to global change
  • Integration of Indigenous knowledge and scientific monitoring
  • Preliminary findings and policy recommendations from the UNEP-GEF project “Reindeer Herding and Resilience”

The event will bring together voices from Indigenous Peoples Organizations, UN Member States, and NGOs to identify best practices and generate actionable policy guidance.

All are welcome to attend, in person or online.
