The World Reindeer Herders’ Congress is a unique cultural and professional event that brings together representatives of reindeer herding peoples from around the circumpolar region. The Congress is organised by World Reindeer Herders (WRH) in cooperation with the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry.

The latest Congress was opened on 5 August 2026, in Tsagaannuur, Mongolia, bringing together Indigenous reindeer herders, community leaders and partners from across the circumpolar North (from Norway, Sweden, Finland, USA, Scotland and Mongolia). 
The 8th World Reindeer Herders Congress (8WRHC) was co-hosted by Mongolia’s Dukha Reindeer Herding Community, the four-day Congress combined cultural celebrations with discussions on the future of reindeer husbandry. Key topics included land degradation, Indigenous knowledge, the Tsagaannuur Declaration and international cooperation.
Held during the UN International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026, the Congress highlighted the importance of Indigenous pastoral livelihoods for resilient rangelands and ecosystems.
The 8WRH Congress was supported by the GEF/UNEP Reindeer Herding and Resilience project.

The next Congress will take place in Scotland in 2030.
