Pastoralist women play a critical role in sustaining rangelands, livestock systems, biodiversity, and community well-being across the world - from arid and semi-arid landscapes to the Arctic and sub-Arctic tundra.

 International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry (ICR), hosted a Mapping Workshop in Kautokeino/Guovdageaidnu, Norway, on 28-30 January 2026, for reindeer herders  organized by the GEF funded UNEP project Reindeer Herding and Resilience  in partnership with the Woodwell Climate Research Center. 

This year, Sámi student from Guovageaidnu (Norway) - Sara Garen Anne Nilut took part in the Arctic Innovation Lab (January 5-12) together with students from the Harvard Kennedy School. 

On January 7, 2026, the American Museum of Natural History in New York hosted a compelling SciCafe event titled “Reindeer and Resilience,” featuring conservation scientist Dr. Mary Blair (Associate Director of the Museum’s Center for Biodiversity and Conservation) and Anders Oskal (Director of the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry and Secretary General of the World Reindeer Herders).

Research shows that reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) undergo a seasonal change in their vision: their eyes shift from gold-tinged hues in summer to deep blue in winter. This change helps them see better during the long, dark Arctic winter.

The seventh session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) will take place from 8 to 12 December 2025 at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, on the theme “Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet” .

The Reindeer Herding and Resilience project team is participating in UNEA-7 and will speak at the associated event, “Harnessing science and Indigenous knowledge for climate resilience and nature action: A focus on peatlands and coral reefs”.

World Reindeer Herders (WRH) and the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry (ICR) took part in the official launch of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026, held on 2 December 2025 at FAO headquarters in Rome. The event, hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), marked the beginning of a global observance aimed at highlighting the essential role of rangelands and pastoralist communities in food security, climate resilience, biodiversity, and sustainable livelihoods.

On 12 November 2025, the traveling Calotte Academy arrived in Kautokeino, Norway, the heart of Sápmi, for a day dedicated to Indigenous perspectives and Europe’s northern futures. The Kautokeino session at the Sámi University of Applied Sciences building, hosted by UArctic EALÁT Institute (UEI) of the International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry (ICR), focused on the theme “Indigenous Peoples and Europe – the Case of the Sámi.”
